Como and surrounding area

Como

In Como you will find high society flair and turn-of-the-century villa charm! The city of just under 86,000 inhabitants is the capital of the province of Como and the namesake of Lago di Como at the southern end of the left arm of Lake Como. This beautiful town is surrounded by the last foothills of the Alps.

The splendid town centre dates back to the Roman Empire and has the typical grid pattern of the town planning of that time. Here you will find many buildings steeped in history, such as the world-famous Como Cathedral with its gleaming dome. The city has historical roots in pre-Christian times and was considered a trading city in the Roman Empire.

In and around the city centre there are many historic villas and museums with various exhibitions of archaeological and craft objects. Art from the Middle Ages to the modern age can also be found here. The Silk Museum with its documentation of silk processing and objects of ancient weaving art is especially recommended.

In the extensive pedestrian zone in the old town centre you will find many small shops with Italian fashion, shoe fashion, handbags, souvenirs and much more. You will also find plenty of small grocery shops (alimentari), bakeries and restaurants and trattorias serving typical Italian cuisine.

Just outside the city you will find outlet shopping and factory direct sales.

A starting point for beautiful walks can be found in the villa suburb of Brunate, located at the top of the local mountain. The village can be reached by the rack railway near Villa Geno.

Cernobbio

Cernobbio is a suburb of Como and known for its famous villas. Villa Erba or the legendary Villa d’Este, which today serves as a luxury hotel and venue for important events, is always worth a visit.

Moltrasio

Moltrasio is also a suburb of Como and lies just under 9 kilometres northwest of Como. A popular stop for tourists here is Villa Oleandra in Laglio between Moltrasio and Argegno on the lake road. This is owned by actor George Clooney and therefore often attracts fans who want to see the property for themselves. In addition, the small community exudes its very own charm with its medieval alleys leading up the mountain.

Argegno

Argegno is a picturesque little holiday resort with a beautiful fishing harbour, a boat landing stage for excursions in all directions, popular restaurants and a beautiful church on the lake. The village of Argegno, with a population of just under 700, lies almost exactly halfway between Como and Menaggio. The stylishly decorated bars, restaurants as well as an enotica and an ice cream parlour around the Piazza Roma invite you to linger.

The Val d’Intelvi, which connects Lake Como with Lake Lugano, begins in Argegno. Here you will find sunny villages in the green and great panoramic views. A paradise for nature lovers and active sportsmen.

The village lies on the slopes of Monte San Zeno, on whose summit a small church was built in the 19th century. You will also find a restaurant serving delicious local specialities.

Pognana Lario

Pognana Lario is a small municipality with about 700 inhabitants and lies on the eastern shore of Lago di Como. Here you will find a beautiful panoramic path that encourages extensive hikes.
