LABREVA Villages on Lake Garda San Felice del Benaco and surroundings
San Felice del Benaco is a romantic village on the south-western shore of Lake Garda on the headland of San Fermo. The municipality with its approximately 3500 inhabitants is situated 2 kilometres above the lake on a gentle slope in the hills of the Valtenesi. Here you will find some well-preserved historical buildings from the Middle Ages, such as the 14th century castle of San Felice. The ruins of the fortress with pretty picnic areas invite you to linger. The sprawling municipality is reminiscent of Tuscany with its vineyards, olive tree and cypress groves. Isola del Garda is off the headland and the largest island in Lake Garda.
San Felice del Benaco has a pretty centre with narrow streets and Mediterranean buildings, and a small harbour with sailing boats. The piazza with cafés, restaurants and small shops invites you to linger.
Manerba del Garda is known for its picturesque stretches of shore with a small harbour and the beautiful long beaches. From the castle ruin (Rocca di Manerba), which was built in the early Middle Ages, you have a breathtaking view over the lake. From the narrow and long headland of Punta Belvedere you have the possibility to wade to the small island “Isola San Biagio”.
The municipality has numerous churches and historical buildings. The town also offers a wide range of culinary delights, with many pubs, restaurants and cafés serving regional specialities. If you are looking for further shopping opportunities, you will find them in the small markets and in the many shops with typical regional products. There are also many festivals in the town dedicated to gastronomy and wines.
In the old centre of the village you will find winding and narrow streets and a castle dating back to the 10th century. A new part of the village, down to Lake Garda, has a picturesque harbour, beautiful pebble beaches and many restaurants. Other highlights are the parish church of San Martino from the early Middle Ages, which is one of the oldest parish churches in Valtenesis, and the church of Madonna della Neve, built in the 16th century and consisting of only one hall.
In addition, Manerba del Garda is the centre of Charetto production (rosé wine).
Padenghe offers a mild climate and beautiful scenery on southern Lake Garda. The municipality is situated on a gentle hill with beautiful panoramic views on the south-western shore of Lake Garda. The small village with its old town centre is surrounded by vineyards, olive and cypress groves and colourful meadows in the south of the lovely hilly landscape of the Valtenesi. A long, shallow bathing beach and the idyllic little harbour invite you to linger.
The town also has some nice shops, restaurants and trattorias. Also worth seeing are the 15th-century Palazzo Arzaga (used as a monastery in its day) and the Villa Barbierei with today’s town hall. Also worth a visit is the medieval castle with a wonderful view of Lake Garda and the lovely landscape of the Valtenesi.
